Haiti Earthquake Updates
Received from Fr. Effener on March 5, 2010
I'm well and all parishioners. My connection to the internet is better now. Thank you verry much for the collection you started to continue the meal program.
The conditions at the parish School are not going to good; there are some children (survivors) from Port-au-Prince coming in the School. They need some helps (clothes, materials for School especialy books). 346 children are enrolled in classes this year.
The conditions at the City Gonaives are not too good . All the activities are going well: School, Church, business .... but the people coming to Gonaives from Port-au-Prince are hungry. They are waiting for from Governmentsome foods and tents to sleep. Now, after the earthquake there are more poverty in Gonaives, in Haiti. Some of survivors come to the rectory to ask help (foods, money, medicine, clothes ...)
The surviors live in the rectory. Some of them go to the School. Among them, there is an orphan (3 years old); her mother died in the earthquake. So, the parish have others needs besides the meal program:
Foods ......................................................... $ 2,750 US
Clothes ........................................................$ 1,600 US
Shool :( books , uniforms, papers and pens) ... $ 850 US
Schooling ................................................... $ 1,500 US
Hospital, Medicine ........................................ $ 750 US
Total .......................................................... $ 7,450 US
Yes, I'm planning to visit your family in Orlando this year in June. I'll send to you some informations about that.
About the meal program there are no money for the next week. I count on you ! Now, after the earthquake, the cost of foods increased and and the rate of exchange from US money to Haitian money is down because the big business at Port-au-Prince are not open; there are not enought business at Port-au-Prince. The cost of food for the meal program is $ 3,850.00 US. The estimated cost to fedd a chil for one month at the School is $ 11.50 US.
If I'll have others informations or answers I 'll send them to you.
My Greeting to you and all parishioners !
Fr. Effener
